This year I chose to take both spring and summer courses to allow myself to take fewer classes in my final year of university. But with the sunshine, outdoor adventures, and other distractions, staying focused on the task can be challenging. So I figured I would write down for my own sake and my reader’s sake three ways I have found to help me focus on homework and studying.
1. Have a Clear Study Space
This one feels a bit like a no-brainer to me, but having a clear space of distractions helps with studying. I like to study outside of my bedroom, and even better is to be outside of my house. Being in the library, a small cafe/bar area, or just a quiet corner somewhere on campus helps me focus so much more since I am forced to pay attention to what is in front of me rather than what is happening around me.
2. Put Away the Cellphone
Your parents, teachers, and boss are correct when they tell you to put your phone away— especially when you’re trying to get stuff done. I know some people like to listen to music as they work, but I find I get much too distracted and shift my focus to what music I want to listen to rather than my homework. The best thing to do when you’re trying to get that essay finished is to turn off your phone or switch it to silent mode and leave it alone.
3. Make a Study/Homework Plan
Rather than diving head first into a massive pile of assigned readings or a 3000-word essay, set some goals and make a basic plan. For me, I do this when I’m writing. Say I had a 1200-word paper due in a week; I would plan my week by setting small writing goals of 300-400 words every day until the piece is finished. Through this method, I typically have a day or two to review my writing, thus creating a better outcome for myself. The added benefit of this method is that I am not rushing to finish an essay or study for a test last minute.
So now you all know some of the simple ways I get myself to focus on homework. There are some other tips and tricks I’ve come across just from functioning within the university setting and being a child of the internet, so I would love to know what works for you guys. Do you listen to music while doing homework? How do you study for tests: by taking short breaks in a long session or having multiple sessions like me? What is something you struggle with when studying/doing homework? Let me know in the comments, email me here, or connect with me through social media (links at the bottom of the page).
