Daily Writing Prompt

I’ve never responded to one of WordPress’s daily writing prompts, but seeing this one I couldn’t help but come up with something.

Daily writing prompt
If you could make your pet understand one thing, what would it be?

First let me introduce the lady of the hour, Lily. My rather large rescue cat of about 9 or 10 years old is quite the character. Over the years with a lot of patience and handling, Lily has gone from being a cat terrified of everything to a friendly albeit sometimes rather sassy queen of the kingdom.

When I first got Lily you could barely touch her. She spent a lot of time hiding in bathroom sinks or sitting at the farthest point of the couch away from you. I don’t know much about her history, but I know she had some aggression issues with another cat at some point.

So rehabilitation and adjusting Lily to her new home took some time. I’ve had her now for almost 5 years and in that time she’s become a lot more vocal, she plays, loves a nice cuddle and can handle getting groomed. She’s even begun to semi-enjoy being picked up, but that depends on who’s picking her up and for how long, plus all kinds of other determining factors.

Nonetheless, its progress.

With that being said if I could make my pet understanding one thing, it would be how much I just adore her.

Lily is a very comforting creature. It’s like she just knows when you need a little extra snuggle time or her deep rumbles on your chest. At her core, Lily is incredibly sweet. She’s been one of my closest companions and I hope she can tell the love I have for her.

Even when she’s being a bit of brat.

Our pets have such a short time with us. It’s cliche almost to talk about. But they make such a difference in our lives. I really hope she knows, or can somehow fathom having such an impact on a creature such as myself.

This apartment. The few rooms we have. The windows out to the same view. This is Lily’s entire life.

I cherish that I get to be a part of it; that fate or lucky timing brought us together, into our our little world in these four walls.

I want her to know that I love her.
